Timeline & Progress

Project Spartan involves a new research, development and engineering facility for BAE Systems, approved in late 2024.

The demolition of the existing Building 36 (and parts of Bays 1-9) was granted consent in May 2023.

The new H-shaped facility will consolidate around 750 personnel currently dispersed across older buildings, allowing for renovation of those buildings once vacated.

The design application referenced a five-storey facility approx. 22 metres tall with 250,000 sq ft internal floorspace.

While planning approval is secured, full construction has yet to commence, so the project remains in the pre-construction phase.

Location & Access

The site is within the existing BAE Systems shipyard complex on Michaelson Road, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, specifically replacing Building 36 and part of the existing industrial footprint.

The location is of national strategic importance, bordering the Devonshire Dock Complex and integrated with the broader shipbuilding and submarine-delivery infrastructure.

Access is via the shipyard’s established internal road network, with additional infrastructure requirements for servicing the new building, staff parking, sustainable travel planning and site servicing having been addressed through planning conditions.
