Fanny House Farm – Bay Gateway Battery Storage

Project Overview

The Bay Gateway Battery Storage project at Fanny House Farm, Heysham, Lancaster is a nationally significant energy infrastructure scheme designed to support the UK’s transition to net zero. The development will deliver a grid-scale battery energy storage system of approximately 940 MW, enabling electricity to be stored when supply is high and released back into the network during periods of peak demand. The project introduces critical flexibility to the national grid, improving energy security and supporting greater use of renewable generation such as offshore wind and solar.

Located on land adjacent to the A683 Bay Gateway, the scheme sits within an established energy corridor surrounded by existing infrastructure including substations, overhead grid connections, a wind turbine and a neighbouring solar farm. The design incorporates significant ecological and landscape enhancements, reserving land for green space and achieving a minimum 10 percent Biodiversity Net Gain, along with drainage and noise-control measures to ensure minimal impact on the local environment and community.

Timeline & Progress

Work on Paddington Village began in 2017, with the first phase completed to coincide with the opening of The Spine. Current works focus on developing Paddington South, including new lab facilities and mixed-use plots, following the demolition of the former police station.

The scheme continues to attract major investment from academic and commercial partners, positioning Liverpool as a key northern hub for research, technology and healthcare innovation.
