Project Overview
The Rectory Lane Energy Storage Project is a 200 MW battery facility designed to store renewable energy and support the UK’s transition to a more flexible, low-carbon grid. Located near Capenhurst in Cheshire, the development will connect to the National Grid to provide vital balancing and storage capacity, helping to stabilise electricity supply during periods of peak demand.
The project incorporates significant environmental measures, including underground cabling, ecological improvements and landscape screening to blend the site into its rural surroundings.
Timeline & Progress
Planning permission for the development was approved by Cheshire West and Chester Council in May 2025. Site preparation and enabling works are expected to begin in late 2025, with grid connection targeted for 2027. The site design is fully reversible, meaning it can be decommissioned and restored at the end of its operational life.
This forward-looking energy project will contribute directly to the UK’s renewable infrastructure targets, providing sustainable employment opportunities for engineers, electricians and construction contractors during its build phase.

The site is located west of Rectory Lane, near Capenhurst, with easy access to Chester, Ellesmere Port and Ledsham. The nearby road and rail network offers convenient travel options for project personnel, while the rural setting provides a peaceful environment for extended contractor stays.
